Mechanistic Pavement Design

This course describes the available methods for carrying out mechanistic-empirical design for flexible pavements. It first provides a brief overview of the 1993 AASHTO design method and presents an Excel sheet that allows extending its use in the future. It then describes the mechanistic approach developed by TxDOT and implemented into the computer program FPS21. Next, it describes the approach implemented into the TxDOT-funded project for designing pavements in expansive clays and presents the Winpres software developed for this purpose. Finally, introduces the recently developed Darwin-ME flexible pavement design approach and explains the special traffic input and material characterization input required for its use. The course is very timely, given the phasing out of the AASHTO 1993 pavement design approach. City of San Antonio and consulting engineers involved in pavement design will significantly benefit from attending.
